Salvia should i
A decade earlier, Griffiths had orchestrated the first controlled study of the subjective effects of salvinorin A. To get a better understanding of how the drug produces its incredibly strong psychedelic effects and whether it might have any clinical relevance for treating conditions like depression or drug addiction, they needed to see what was happening at the neural level.
So I got high … for science. Last week, the team published the results of the study in Scientific Reports , detailing what they saw in our brains as we tripped. The most prominent effect seen in all 12 subjects was a significant decrease in the synchrony of the default mode network.
This network is a mesh of brain regions that is primarily associated with internal thoughts but also plays a role in memory and emotion. Different regions of the brain will show increased activity when we focus on a specific task outside of ourselves, like reading or playing an instrument, but the default mode network is what pops back on when we turn our attention back on ourselves.
When your attention turns inward, the communication between the brain regions in the default mode network syncs up like musicians in an orchestra. Other fMRI studies of volunteers high on better known psychedelics like LSD and psilocybin, the psychoactive molecule in mushrooms, have also shown decreases in coupling among the areas involved in this network.
Some researchers think that the decreased activity between these network connections is part of the essence of what makes psychedelic drugs so psychedelic. But the Johns Hopkins researchers think this is not the whole story. This, he says, has caused researchers to focus less attention on changes in activity elsewhere in the brain, even though those changes are often larger than in the default mode network.
Moreover, non-psychedelic drugs including cannabis and alcohol also cause decreases in default brain network activity, which complicates the idea that it might be the root of a psychedelic experience.
Perhaps the biggest difference is that while most psychedelics primarily act on serotonin receptors, salvinorin A acts on the kappa opioid receptor, which seems to play a role in regulating pain and modulating the effects of common opioids like morphine and fentanyl. The molecule is produced naturally in salvia divinorum, a type of sage in the mint family.
Thank you so much Maggie. Hi Brittany — Thank you! Hugs from the Arizona desert, Nell. Hi Nell! They were gorgeous over the summer but now they look like dead sticks. Should I prune them now or in the spring?
And what type of pruning would be best for them? Thanks in advance! Hi, Nell, thanks so much for this info!
Great article! I found so much helpful information in it. I also live in the Bay Area. Dead head after flowering. Hi Nell, Great post, thank you. Will they come back and flower this year? Thank you for your precious opinion. Thank you Andrew! I learned this the hard way many years ago. Thank you very much Nell, much appreciated you taking the time to answer. My salvias are 3 years old.
I will let you know if they flower this year. All the best, Andrew. Thank you so much for this post! I was amazed at how a dwarf salvia greggii bloomed and grew all year round here in Tucson.
After one year, it is a little woody. Hi fellow Tucson resident — Oh yes, I learned this the hard way when I was new to gardening with salvias! Thanks so much for your advice on pruning salvias. I did not realise Sage was a salvia, Doh!! We are set to get snow over Easter……. Can you list the most fragrant salvias please? Some salvias I have bought in the UK do not seem to have a fragrance.
Most salvias that I know have a scent to their foliage. The most known are S. Gets sun from about 1pm to dusk.
Thank You, Kimmi. Hi Kimmi — July is fine for planting as long as you give them enough water to get going. Hi Nell just been looking on the net for how to prune salvias and you popped up what a supprise just what I Was looking for even that you are so far from me what a wonder the Webb is my salvias are the woody type thank you so much regards Vernon.
Salvia is potent, so small doses may produce hallucinogenic effects. If you use extracts, less is more. The NDIC recommends that the higher the extract concentration, the smaller the dose. For example, 0. If you try 10x salvia extract, a safe range may be between 0. How salvinorin A, the active ingredient in salvia, impacts your brain is unclear. Researchers continue to study the drug to better understand its effects.
Salvia studies are few and far between, but researchers are looking to better understand how the drug works and what effects it may have on the body and brain. Because research is limited, the list of possible side effects and risks is short. However, the possible issues are serious and worth consideration. Salvia largely flew under the radar until when a video of pop music star Miley Cyrus made waves on the internet. In the video, the thenyear-old singer and actress was filmed smoking salvia in a water bong.
The video brought the spotlight of attention to this drug, and some state legislators began introducing laws restricting the sale and use of this plant. That means individual state laws apply to salvia but no federal ones.
Today, many states have laws on the books that outlaw buying, possessing, or selling salvia. Some states have age restrictions, and some states outlaw salvia extracts but not the plant. Additionally, talk with your doctor if you try salvia and experience issues or side effects. If you are growing the plant or have salvia in your home, consider this a drug to be kept from children and pets.
